Stawell Yacht Club Results - October 5, 2014
Current club champion Johno Knight continued on from where he left off last summer with a good win in the season-opening “ice-breaker” trophy race on Sunday.
He didn’t have it all his own way however, having to overhaul Andrew Pearce who jumped out of the blocks early and led for the first few legs before falling victim to the fickle breeze.
A small pack of other sailors were also nipping at his heels for most of the distance, comprised of Mark Knights, Jan Ibs von Seht and Peter Knight.
This group opened up quite a gap on the rest of the field early on, but the lead was squandered later in proceedings when the trailer sailer of Leigh Edwards and the Impulses of George Grellet and Tony Hillier picked up breeze and came storming home to bunch the field.
Weather conditions were ideal for the first race, which brought out an entry of eleven boats, including a record number of eight Impulses.
(However although the wind was relatively benign and everyone managed to stay upright, there were still reports of some aching muscles on Monday.)
The most noteworthy and impressive performance was that of Mark Knights, who for the past four seasons has been the club’s only regular catamaran skipper.
He finally tired of sailing around ahead of everyone else with no-one to talk to, so just last week made the decision to sell his Taipan and join the growing Impulse ranks.
In his first day in the new dinghy Mark sailed very consistently and was never out of the top three, finishing in third place and sending a warning to the rest of the fleet that if he continues with this ‘Daniel Ricciardo’ style success then he’ll be hard to beat.
Final results were: 1st Johno Knight, Impulse; 2nd Jan Ibs von Seht, Impulse; 3rd Mark Knights, Impulse; 4th Leigh Edwards, Sorceror.
The club wishes to thank the management at the Gift Hotel who sponsored the race.
The sailing season will be officially opened this Sunday, 12th October, followed by the first Pennant event.
